The success of Prolan engineers
Prolan Steuerbox certified by the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI)
The controller unit developed by Prolan has successfully passed the rigorous assessment of the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) and received the official certification. Prolan, based in Budakalász, is the first non-German company to complete this certification process successfully. This device, designed and manufactured by the 230-employee Hungarian enterprise, shall play a key role in the digitalization of German energy networks. Testing procedures of the device had been ongoing at over 30 German electricity grid operators currently.
Essen, E-world Energy & Water Fair, February 12, 2025
It was at the E-world trade fair in Essen, where BSI announced that the Prolan Steuerbox, an intelligent controller unit developed by the Hungarian company Prolan Zrt., has been officially certified under technical guideline TR-03109-5. This marks a major milestone not only for Prolan, but for the entire German electricity industry as, this certification enables the deployment of compliant controller units in households using solar panels, battery storage systems, heat pumps, or electric vehicle chargers.
Millions of such smart devices are expected to be installed in the next decade. Prolan’s Steuerbox is the most widely tested and recognized solution of its kind in Germany at the moment. There are only two German manufacturers alongside the Hungarian company, who have received the same certification, signaling the beginning of a large-scale rollout of smart metering systems in line with Germany’s green energy transition. According to the recently adopted legislation, not only digital meters and remote reading devices are being installed, but also smart control units capable of managing grid-feeding equipment (such as solar panels, batteries, small wind turbines) and flexible loads (such as heat pumps, home batteries, EV chargers) remotely.
As in the German market, households have access to electricity at competitive market tariffs, smart control is essential not only for grid stability, but also for energy efficiency and savings.
The certificate obtained by Prolan following an intensive evaluation process confirms that Prolan Steuerbox does not only comply with the technical requirements defined by the Forum Netztechnik/Netzbetrieb im VDE (FNN), but meets today’s most stringent cybersecurity standards as well. This certification confirms that the Steuerbox is ready for broad deployment and fully aligns with Germany’s established relay-based control architecture.
Prolan continues development
The company’s R&D work continues: the next step in the rollout is the standardization and certification of fully digital Steuerbox control, tailored to meet the requirements of German grid operators, metering service providers, and households.
It is an outstanding achievement for us to succeed in the demanding German industrial and regulatory environment as a Hungarian company, and competing alongside highly respected local manufacturers. The success of the Steuerbox demonstrates that Hungarian engineering and innovation can actually meet the highest expectations of the German market.
It is our dedicated team behind Prolan’s Energy Management division and the trust of our German partners to whom we can owe this success. With over 30 joint test projects underway, the Steuerbox has become the most widespread FNN-compliant controller unit in Germany.
Based on our experience in both the German and Czech markets, and the understanding of the specific needs of smart metering and grid flexibility in Hungary, our engineering team is currently developing a cost-effective solution tailored to local requirements that also keep up with the upcoming challenges of the future.
